But, the authors of the past seem to have laid much of the groundwork for how we view and philosophize about the existence and condition of mankind. One of the Renaissance minds was Michel de Montaigne. The following paper briefly discusses his work "Apology for Raymond Sebond." The paper then examines Pope Innocent IIIs "On the Misery of Man" and Giannozzo Manettis "On the Dignity of Man" and discusses which of these works best reflects the ideals presented in Montaignes work. Montaigne "Montaignes skepticism is largely confined to An Apology for Raymond Sebond" (Michel Eyguem de Montaigne (1533-1592)). In this work he looks to take charge of mans pride and make him more humble. He argues that, "there is a plague on Man, the opinion that he knows something. This skepticism is connected with the doctrine of Christian folly which says that Gods wisdom is to be found in the lowly and the meek, and that the belief that one has knowledge prevents one from accepting the truths of religion" (Michel Eyguem de Montaigne (1533-1592)). One of the things that Montaigne is most famous for is his argument "that man is not in any way superior to the beasts, in fact, quite the contrary" (Michel Eyguem de Montaigne (1533-1592)). In this we see that Montaigne was not necessarily stating that mankind was inherently evil or bad, but that mankind did have the need, as well as the potential, to become more humble in the face of God and the nature he had created.
