the primary reference manual used by psychiatrists, psychologists, and many others who work in the mental health field. This manual is referred to simply as the DSM, the most recent
edition is the DSM-IV-TR, which means this is the fourth edition and it had some text revisions in 2000. This manual classifies mental disorders including the criteria that are needed
to make a diagnosis. A multi-axial system was introduced in 1980. It intends to offer a more discrete and more comprehensive picture of disorders. There was also the need to
introduce the biopsychosocial model into practice (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders, 2010). The classifications are: Axis 1: clinical disorders, including anxiety, mood; Axis 2: personality disorders; Axis 3: general medical conditions;
Axis 4: psychosocial and environmental problems; Axis 5: Global assessment of functioning (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders, 2010). Each of these includes numerous specific disorders. Anxiety disorders, mood disorders, dissociative and
somatoform disorders all fall under Axis 1. Anxiety is a normal response of the body when we face a stressful situation. It goes along with the flee or fight
response to fear. It becomes a disorder when it is chronic and it interferes with daily life. Physical symptoms may include sweating, headaches, stomach aces, shortness of breath and insomnia.
