Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 7 page essay. Antonio Lobo Antunes, contemporary Portuguese author, writes in a style that is very reminiscent of the psychologically complex novels of Faulkner or Dos Passos. In both Act of the Damned and The Natural Order of Things, Antunes presents perceptually complicated narratives that offer a cacophony of voices through the medium of jumbled interior monologues that encompass, simultaneously, both action happening in the current time and a host of memories. The following examination of these novels focuses on the development of two characters from each narrative, detailing their psychological orientation and the role that they fulfill within the context of each novel. the Damned and The Natural Order of Things, Antunes presents perceptually complicated narratives that offer a cacophony of voices through the medium of jumbled interior monologues that encompass, simultaneously, both
action happening in the current time and a host of memories. The following examination of these novels focuses on the development of two characters from each narrative, detailing their psychological
orientation and the role that they fulfill within the context of each novel. The Natural Order of Things Throughout this work the dominant theme is that of emotional and
psychological isolation. The title is ironic because the "natural order of things" in this narrative has been tremendously upset. Neither of the two families that are the focus of the
plot exhibits the love, trust and understanding that ideal should be the nexus of family life. Jorge Through memories, revealed through interior monologue, combined with current scenes, the reader
comes to understand how Jorge (not to be confused with Ernesto da Conceicao Portas) came to join the military. In one scene, memories of a conversation with his father concerning
military service, "The cavalry is our branch of the service, son, I cant think of anything more ridiculous than an officer without a horse" (Natural Order 155), is interspersed with
instructions from a police inspector, who states, "Give the bozo some electric shocks and hell swear he killed his aunt, if necessary" (Antunes, Natural Order 155). As this indicates, Antunes
style is dreamlike, snapping from one image to the next like a movie camera. Eventually Jorge confesses to the authorities, "...my father hid my sister Julieta out of anger and
shame that he wasnt her father, he didnt want anyone to know that the mother of his four children had then given birth by another man" (Antunes, Natural Order 157).
