as a love story and then examines the story as it compares and contrasts to Shakespeares Othello. Antony and Cleopatra In understanding some of the play Antony and Cleopatra
we first look at the play itself, noting that " Antony and Cleopatra was written in 1607....Although classified sometimes as a tragedy, the play is unique and difficult to categorize"
(ClassicNotes [1]). This is because it possesses many different elements that speak of tragedy, but also of political turmoil and obligation. As such it could be one of his political
drama plays such as seen in one of the plays about one or another Henry. However, it is the struggles of love that make it a tragedy, and so it
is generally classed as a tragedy. In this story Antony and Cleopatra are essentially consumed by one another, yet they are not free to marry one another in a
world of politics. In the beginning Antony is already married. This does not stop them from loving one another, and it does not stop them from being together in such
a manner that Cleopatra bears his children. At one point Antonys wife dies and for the audience this would offer the option of Antony marrying Cleopatra. However politics control
who they will marry and what path their lives will take. Antony must, for political reasons, marry Octavia. Because there are great tensions between Antony and Octavius remains high. "To
seal the mens alliance, a marriage is brokered between Antony and Octavia, Octavius sister" (ClassicNotes [2]). Cleopatra who, in her romantic dreams, felt that she may have had the hope
