body in much of his work (Carter 30). An example of this is his Quantum Cloud XX (tornado), which is on display at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas.
Created in 2000, this sculpture is comprised of stainless steel and is 91 3/4 x 58 5/8 x 47 1/4 in. (233 x 148.8 x 120 cm.). The cast
of the artists own body stands within a "diffuse field of welded steel bars" ("Antony Gormley"). While the piece was inspired by Gormleys interest in quantum physics, the work also
is heavily influenced by Gormleys experience and beliefs concerning transcendental meditation ("Antony Gormley"). The artist states that "By focusing the attention on the body through vipassana meditation...I experienced consciousness at
the center of a transitive field of energy" ("Antony Gormley"). This meaning comes across clearly viewing the sculpture, as the dark outline of a body is evident within a
"cloud" or "tornado" of steel bars, each one with a smaller cross-bar welded to one end, so that they have the shape of a capital T. The presentation alludes both
to a scientific and a metaphysical interpretation of reality, as the cloud surrounding the artist is suggestive of the energy field to which Gormley refers. Throughout his career, Gormley
has explored the "relationship between the body and its environment," while envisioning this relation as encompassed by the "transcendental aspect of everyday life" ("Antony Gormley"). Quantum Cloud XX (tornado) is
part of a "series of 33 open-form, welded steel sculptures" that Gormley has thus far created, which includes the "colossal Quantum Cloud" that which is a 95-foot tall version of
this work that was erected in London as part of the Millennium celebration ("Antony Gormley"). In this sculpture, which is very similar to its smaller version at the Nasher
