From this most basic of definitions, concerning the writing of Flannery OConnor and Anton Chekhov, one would assume that their writing was incredibly different. However, there are similarities between the two as it involves the various elements of writing. In the following paper we examine the similarities, as well as the differences, between Chekhov and OConnor as it relates to style, plots symbolism, themes, and characterizations. Style "OConnors writing style is unaffected and unadorned like many of the Southern towns, characters and townspeople she writes about. However, her subdued style delivers a pointed sword in the readers conscious, as a result, making you look closer at what she is trying to convey" (McGovern oconnor.htm). With Chekhov we find that "He was largely responsible for the modern type of short story that depends for effect on mood and symbolism rather than on plot. His narratives, rather than having a climax and resolution, are a thematic arrangement of impressions and ideas" (Anonymous Anton Chekhov 1860-1904 chekhov.htm). As we can see, both of these individuals had a style that was somewhat direct, but at the same time obviously left a great deal up to the reader or the audience to discern.
