not have a proper burial, a burial due a great man like her brother, then his spirit and his reputation are lost. Antigone goes against the rulings of men and
fights in the hopes her brother will get the burial he deserves. The following paper examines the political and familial aspects of this story, a story of a woman in
a mans world. Sophocles "Antigone" Initially, "Antigone" appears to be an obvious story of political dilemmas focusing on civil disobedience and civic responsibility, rather than the personal development
and revolution of one woman. Certainly all of those issues have been seen throughout the history of literature. Despite classical assumptions and the typical reaction of modern cultures to view
the character of Antigone as a perfect example of heroic resistance to tyranny, the play is not a political drama, but the battle of wills between two family members --
Creon and his niece Antigone. It does not take much of a leap of imagination to also see the story as a drama of male subjugation and female determination. Antigone
declares to Creon that the laws of heaven are "unwritten and unchanging, not of today or yesterday is their authority; they are eternal, no man saw their birth" (Antigone 456-459).
As one author notes, in such lines "Antigone does not give Creon additional respect either because he is a man in a patriarchal society or because he is king. In
