In ancient tales we see women generally stuck in particular roles, but then we also see them break free from these roles, challenging their society and the patriarchal society that controls them. In the classic play "Antigone" we have a woman, Antigone, who challenges her society in arguing for the honor of her brother. She is a woman oppressed in a mans world, yet a woman who pushes for what she sees is right and honorable. Another woman from a classic play is Ophelia, from Shakespeares Hamlet. Ophelia is not a woman who challenges the society ruled by men, but she is a woman who accurately demonstrates the way in which a patriarchal society controls women. The following paper compares and contrasts the two women and their roles in society. Antigone and Ophelia Antigones role in society is generally non-existent, outside of being a woman, until her brother is killed and refused the honor he deserves. It is then that she steps outside the boundaries set for her, arguing that her brother be given the proper burial and honor he deserves. With Ophelia we see a woman who is well immersed in her role as a woman. She listens to her father as well as her brother in terms of advice and guidelines for her life which is seen in one scene where her brother tells her to watch out and she replies: "I shall the effect of this good lesson keep, As watchman to my heart" (Shakespeare I iii). She would not dream, it seems, of stepping outside those boundaries and arguing for or against Hamlet.
