tragic figures in the history of Greek classical literature, the strong-willed young woman would disagree. After her mothers suicide and fathers banishment from Thebes, the region suffered under her uncle Creons authoritarian leadership, and was plunged into a constant state of civil war, which literally pitted brother against brother. One of Antigones brothers, Eteocles, fought in Creons army while the other male sibling, Polynices, fought for the opposition. When both brothers are killed in combat, Creon decreed that Eteocles would be accorded with a heros funeral rites while the body of the rebellious Polynices was left to openly decay and serve as animal and insect food. Antigone is furious by what she perceives to be flagrant injustice to her brothers memory as every soldier who dies in the line of duty should be accorded the same proper burial. She confides to her sister Ismene that she will see to it that Creon rights the grievous wrong he did to Polynices by holding him accountable in the name of justice. Antigone makes it clear that she intends to disobey the King by performing the burial rite herself and that while she would appreciate Ismenes support, she will pursue justice with or without her sisters assistance. With an impressive strength that demonstrates her unwavering commitment to justice, Antigone eloquently announces: "I intend / To give my brother burial. Ill be glad / To die in the attempt, -- if its a crime, / Then its a crime that God commands. I then / Could face my brother as a friend and look / Him in the eyes.
