the King); Oedipus at Colonus and finally, Antigone. This paper explores the play with regard to the way in which Sophocles uses it as a vehicle to discuss themes of
love, religion and politics. Discussion The plot of the play is simple. Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, the unhappy former King of Thebes who killed his father and married
his mother. After finding out about these enormous crimes, he blinded himself and left the city to wander; by the time Antigone begins, the old man has died. Antigone and
her sister Ismene are now living with their uncle, Creon, who has taken the throne. But the girls had two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, both of whom were killed
in battle on the same day. Creon has allowed Eteocles to be buried with all honors due him, but has left Polyneices corpse to rot, claiming that he is a
traitor. Further, he has made it punishable by death for anyone to bury him. Antigone, showing great courage, sneaks out of the city and sprinkles dust on the body, fulfilling
the ritual. Her act is discovered and the dirt removed, at which point she does it again, and is caught. Creon, who is little less than a monster, sentences her
to death; specifically, she is to be buried alive. Antigone and Haemon, who is Creons son, are engaged to be married, but even that doesnt deter the kings fury.
He carries out the sentence. Haemon tries to dissuade him, only to have his father call him weak and womanish. After some thought, however, and pleas from the blind prophet
Teiresias who tells him he is defying the gods laws by leaving Polyneices unburied, Creon goes to release Antigone. Hes too late: she has hanged herself, and Haemon, who entered
