infamous Oedipus, is a woman who is incredibly loyal to her brother, a man who has died. She rejects the normal constraints of her gender and fights to make things
right concerning what she deems righteous in relationship to her brother and his death. The following paper examines the theme of conformity and rebellion in the story of Antigone.
Antigone: Conformity and Rebellion As mentioned, Antigones brother, Polynices, has died and unlike her other brother, he is not given a proper funeral befitting a noble man or noble
warrior. Antigone is, to say the least, quite disgruntled and insulted at this truth and talks with her sister. In the characters of Antigone and her sister, Ismene, the reader
can see the two different themes being discussed. Antigone is very rebellious, and does not adhere to the rules laid down for women when it comes to the reality of
her brothers disrespectful treatment. Ismene, however, is very much a woman who conforms to the rules of her gender. In the beginning Ismene tells Antigone, "The law is strong.
We must give in to the law...I am helpless. I must yield" (Sophocles). Antigone is essentially put out and disappointed at Ismenes comments and tells her, "If that is what
you think, I should not have you, even if you asked to come...apparently the laws of the gods mean nothing to you" (Sophocles). In these words, in this conversation,
the reader is made very aware of the two themes, that of conformity and that of rebellion. Ismene is clearly a woman who is going to do what she is
told. Women have no place in the world of men, and especially the world of law. She knows this and succumbs to this truth without question. She does not necessarily
