Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page research paper that contrasts and compares two antifungal medications, terbinafine and ketoconazole. The discussion of these two drugs examines the mechanism of action for each medication, the enzymes involved and the manner in which these drugs are metabolized. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

drugs are metabolized. Ketoconazole (brand name, Nizoral) is primarily used to treat skin infections, such as jock itch, athletes foot, and ringworm, as well as fungal infections of the fingernails,
toenails, mouth, lungs, vagina and blood (Ketoconazole, Nizoral). Terbinafine (brand name, Lamisil) is also used to treat fungal infections of the toenails and fingernails (Terbinafine, Lamisil). Fungal infection are
typically resistant to therapy and treatment can take a long time, frequently requiring months of drug therapy if the infection is deep (Ketoconazole). The antifungal drug ketoconazole works by interfering
with the structure of the fungal cell wall. This effect may either kill the fungus or inhibit its ability to reproduce (Ketoconazole). This drug also blocks the synthesis
of natural cortisone in the adrenal gland, which means that it can also be used to treat Cushings disease, an illness that produces too much natural cortisone (Ketoconazole). Additional Ketoconazole
interferes with the production of testosterone, so its use may have a feminizing effect on some males. Ketoconazole belongs to the class of antifungal drugs known as "imidazole" (Ketoconazole
Information). It has a five-membered ring structure that has two nitrogen atoms (Ketoconazole Information). Ketoconazole works primarily through the inhibition of cytochrome P450 14a-demethylase (Ketoconazole Information). This enzyme is present
in the sterol biosynthesis pathway that describes the pathway from lanosterol to ergosterol (Ketoconazole Information). There is some evidence that ketoconazole may affect thyroid functioning. In vitro experiments have shown
that ketoconazole forms a complex with iodine and inhibits lacktoperoxidase. Terbinafine is an allylamine in structure and related to naftifine (Terbinafine). A synthetic antifungal medication, it is highly lipophilic
and tends to accumulate in skin, nails, and fatty tissue (Terbinafine). Unlike ketoconazole, which affects the structure of the fungus cell wall, terbinafine works by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis, by
