, Inc. 3/2010 Please Introduction As a result of decades of excessive and unnecessary antibiotic use,
antibiotic-resistant bacterium, specifically methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has led to the need for research studies to identify the variety of factors that lead to antibiotic resistance. The proposed research
study will identify the potential sources of MRSA infection in a hospital setting and relate a set of nursing protocols to measures to reduce the spread of MRSA.
Statement of the Problem The presence of bacterial colonization has been studied considerably, with a focus on the colonization of Staphylococci aureus; research suggests that 80 percent of
the world population will experience colonization at sometime in their lives (Herchline 2007, p. 1). While most people are only colonized briefly, approximately 20-30 percent of the population
has been colonized persistently and can experience major health problems related to this colonization (Herchline 2007, p. 1). It is not surprising that this bacterium has become the focus
of studies of antibiotic resistance. Because patients in the ICU unit have vulnerable health status, they are more likely than others to demonstrate an inability to fight off
S. aureus colonization, and may fall prey to the development of MRSA (Carr et al. 2003, p. 235; Marrinak & Frank 2003, p. 265).
Farr and Bellingan (2004, p. 153) maintained that there is a need to ensure consistency in the application of infection control measures as a first line defense in reducing
