Sudan, defining both cultural and political identity. The current fundamentalist society in the middle east (1)considers all other political systems as inferior; (2) is embarked in what is defined
as a holy war against those countries and societies that are in opposition to Islam and is bent on and (3) is based on an extremist view of both religious
and political organization. The anti-westernism of the Islamic nations stems from the (1) economic power structure that defines the middle east as subordinate to the western states,
(2) a belief that western culture is in opposition to Islam and (3) the fear that Western culture will be able to win the war for the souls of the
Islamic population through the political and economic usurpation of ideological power. Islamic leaders of the fundamentalist movement interpret the western agenda as being in a conspiracy to destroy Islam
and the leaders of Islamic states. They maintain that the wests motivation for ultimately taking control of the middle east is based on a hatred of Islamic principles and
on greed for middle east resources, notably oil. They fear that the western culture, with modern conveniences and popular culture items will lead the younger generation into a capitalistic
orientation that reflects the western ideals of consumerism rather than the Islam morality (Pipes 53). The concept of a superpower that Americans think of in terms of altruism
