birthplace of Islam. Two cultures in particular harbor ill will towards the United States not merely for political reasons, but also because their cultures and religions have encouraged anti-American
attitudes. Former George W. Bushs references to North Korea and Iran as "an Axis of Evil in the world" in his State of the Union Address did little to
ease tensions and animosities between Uncle Sam and these very different cultures (as cited in Beeman, 2005, p. 133). North Korea is a relatively new political state, created as a
result of a postcolonial North/South subdivision determined by the United States and the former Soviet Union in 1948 (Culture of North Korea, 2010). This enabled the newly created country
to develop its own unique cultural identity, the specifics of which remains very much a mystery to the rest of the world, particularly the United States (Culture of North Korea,
