a more effective public health antismoking campaign in Lubbock, particularly in regards to the high rate of cigarette smoking among high school students. Data on risk assessment and trends in
disease prevention in Texas confirmed this evaluation. Furthermore, empirical research further stressed the need for tailoring antismoking messages to the perceptions of specific target groups, recognizing that the advertising messages
that are successful for early adolescents are not necessarily productive in dissuading late adolescents or young adults from smoking. Smokers, as defined
at the national level and at the community level: Currently, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 46 million Americans, which translates into 20.6 percent of
all adults (aged 18 and older, smoke cigarettes (CDC, 2010). The habit is most common among men (23.1 percent), but 18.3 percent of American women smoke as well (CDC, 2010).
Tobacco use continues to be the most prevalent cause of preventable morbidity and morality in the US. Therefore, in order to assess the progress toward reaching the Healthy People 2010
goal of decreasing the prevalence of adult cigarette use to less than 12 percent, the CDC analyzed the data gathered by the 2008 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). This analysis
shows that the prevalence of smoking among adults has declined by 3.5 percent over the last decade (CDC, 2008). However, this proportion did not undergo significant change between 2007
