in 1888, educated at Harvard, Oxford and the Sorbonne before settling in England and eventually becoming a citizen in 1927. Although T.S. Eliot dabbled in all literary forms, it
is perhaps for his poetry that he is best remembered. Eliot was unafraid of expressing controversial opinions on the subjects of literary criticism, modern society and religion. He
developed his original poetic style through his association with American poet Ezra Pound, and has often been described as "vague" and possessing "mysterious images" (Baptiste 1995). In the years since
his death, however, the poetry of T.S. Eliot has undergone close scrutiny by the literary community in an attempt to decipher these "mysterious images." The conclusion of many critics
has been that these images conjured by Eliot were not at all mysterious, but were, rather, representative of a notorious anti-Semitism which he displayed both in public and private throughout
his life. There is certainly evidence of the accused anti-Semitism, both obscure, and not-so-obscure running through Eliots poetry. A 1995 book by Anthony Julius, T.S. Eliot, Anti-Semitism
and Literary Form has fanned the anti-Semitic flames which have engulfed him for over 30 years. While expressing admiration for his creative artistry, it is evident that Julius believes
that Eliot was a highly bigoted individual as both a racist and an anti-Semitic. According to Julius, Eliot was the type of artist "who was able to place his
anti-Semitism at the service of his art. Anti-Semitism supplied part of the material out of which he created poetry. I do not ask the biographical question: what made Eliot an
