by athletes, many of whom use these drugs in order to relieve pain that might prevent them from continuing participation in a particular sport. Though widely used, anti-inflammatory corticosteroids
are not without side effects, some of which can impact exercise or physical performance. Background and Agents Corticosteroids are a category of steroids that are commonly used because of
their anti-inflammatory effects (Wayman, 2002). Cortisols are the naturally occurring corticosteroids, but there are a number of different synthetic corticosteroids that are commonly used, including prednisone, dexamethasone and
methylprednisolone (Wayman, 2002). In high doses, corticosteroids can be valuable because they essentially suppress the immune function or response, and reduce the reaction to certain indicators, including the
presence of an allergen or a physical injury (Wayman, 2002). "Corticosteroids are catabolic substances, they promote the breakdown of tissues such as lean muscle. Even so, corticosteroids are often
used to treat injuries in athletes" (Wayman, 2002). In fact, sports clinicians and medical professionals have argued that the rapid introduction of intravenous corticosteroids following a back or neck
injury resulting in swelling could determine permanent benefits by reducing the damage caused by swelling (Wayman, 2002). Athletes often pursue the use of corticosteroids to reduce swelling and
to allow athletes to continue to perform in the presence of a possibly debilitating injury. Critics have argued that the use of steroids for this kind of health problem
has other risks, including risks involved in the introduction of steroids for the athlete. At the same time, it is necessary to consider the different types of corticosteroids used
for their anti-inflammatory effects, and the value of these agents. The following are some of the major corticosteroids and their ????????? Research owned and published
