as one that is value based, as it values differences while also setting up a generative tension between the acceptance of difference and the rejection of unjust beliefs and actions
(Corson 385). The basis of an anti-bias curriculum is the requirement that both teachers and students will accept differences in racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds as fundamental and confront any
problematic issues that thwart the goal of inclusion and positive self-esteem for all students (Corson 385). An anti-bias curriculum is particularly crucial in contemporary American society, as the nation
becomes increasingly more culturally and ethnically diverse with each passing year. Situations that arise between children wherein children express the idea that they are superior due to the fact that
they are male or English-speakers or Caucasian harms not only the victims of such remarks, but also the speakers, as this view is a distortion of reality (Corson 385).
Say for example, a teacher in an early elementary grade overhears one child tell a Hispanic child that she is "Youre stupid! You cant talk properly" (Corson 385). Rather than
simply reprimand the child that this remark was rude and insensitive, a teacher following an anti-bias curriculum ensures that both children are exposed to the idea that there are many
different languages and ways of speaking. Within this teachers classroom, many different strategies will be employed that convey that each culture is valued. For example, a sign at the door
might say "welcome" written in a variety of languages; the students might be taught a song in Spanish; or the teacher might encourage the children to teach each other words
