the fact that the characters demonstrate human qualities such as the power of speech. In some cases the representation has an obvious symbolic or metaphoric meaning, whereas in others, the
reason for anthropomorphism may be more obscure and subtle. As Street (2009) comments, the use of animal figures in the work of Alexandre-Gabriel
Decamps has a strong satirical element, especially in his monkey portraits. Street points out that from the 16th century, monkeys had come to represent the somewhat uninspired skill of the
artisan rather than the genius of the fine artist, and the idea of "apeing nature . . like a chimp in a bowler hat smoking a cigar" (1) was a
popular way of indicating that the successful artist was superior to his "conceptually pedestrian" imitators. However, Decamps The Monkey Painter is not a straightforward satirical commentary on the art world,
unlike the later work, The Experts. In The Monkey Painter, the simian artists is dressed as a society gentleman, and as Street notes,
the accoutrements of his studio, such as the pistol and the antique Chinese vase, are those "associated with gentlemanly sophistication" (1). Street states that it is, therefore, ironic that such
artifacts cannot be successfully manipulated by "clumsy, inward-curling monkey fingers" (1), although this view does not seem to take into account the fact that many species of apes and monkeys
are, in fact, remarkably dexterous. Street argues that the focal point of the image, in terms of the social commentary being presented, is in fact the painting on the artists
