a cartoon rabbit on TV standing upright, talking and wearing clothes, we are seeing an example of anthropomorphism. A good example of anthropomorphic language would be the phrase "and the
dish ran away with the spoon" from the popular nursery rhyme. An "angry" black cloud, a computer that has just "died," and a TV commercial in which an animated automobile
with eyes for headlights and teeth for a radiator grille talks about how much she wishes for a certain grade of gasoline, all are examples of anthropomorphic languages and images.
Anthropomorphism in religion is quite old, and the Bible itself is full of anthropomorphic language. An example would be references to the "hand of God" or of God "breathing the
breath of life" into Adams nostrils. Both of these convey the impression of a deity that appears very much the way we do. In fact, God says straight out in
Genesis, "Let us make man in our image..." (Wettstein, 2000). Anthropomorphism was popular in the early Christian church, up until the third century A.D. or more, but then fell
out of favor as a more philosophical approach took over. In more recent years, however, the fundamentalist and evangelical movements have resurrected the popularity of the concept, for a very
simple reason-that the Bible says it, so it must be so. That is the very foundation of fundamentalism (Wettstein, 2000). The anti-anthropomorphist, on the other hand, believes in a God
