specific communities ("Doing health anthropology"). As this suggests, perspectives gained from anthropology help inform and facilitate understanding the health needs of specific communities, and can also aid nurses in addressing
trans-cultural nursing in an effective manner. As this suggests, a sub-discipline of anthropology that applies to directly is ethnography (McGarry 7). While definitions of ethnography vary, it is
basically the "study of a particular social group or culture in naturally occurring settings" (McGarry 7). Ethnography can be perceived as "getting to know the research participants as people" as
the nurse researcher becomes "immersed with the culture under study" (Roberts 15). Ethnography has been increasingly utilized across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including nursing, as a research method. Through
the medium of ethnography, nurse researchers explore the cultural basis for the thoughts and feelings that clients hold toward their health and health behaviors. This information informs nursing and provides
a foundation for formulating effective trans-cultural nursing practice. There are numerous resources on which nurses can draw in order to develop an anthropological perspective on their practice and clientele.
There are numerous nursing scholars who utilizing ethnographic techniques in their research; university courses that address both anthropology and nursing; and also Leiningers Culture Care Theory of nursing, which focuses
on the significance and meaning of culture in relation to how it informs nursing practice concerning the topics of health and caring behavior. The foundations of this theory can be
