another branch of anthropology but ethnologists dont study societies in the way that anthropologists and ethnographers do; instead, ethnologists use research provided by others to compare various cultures. Ethnographers compare
societies directly, through contact with them. In their study of cultures, both ethnographers and ethnologists may encounter terms like ethnocentrism, ethnomusicology and ethnopoetics. They are what they sound like: ethnopoetics
is the study of poetry within the context of a culture; ethnomusicology is the study of music in these circumstances. Ethnocentrism is a bit different, and is not really surprising:
its the belief that ones own culture is superior to that of others. Its perhaps one of the most human things about us, the idea that our group is the
best there is. These disciplines all help to understand various cultures, but that term is not simple to define and there are many arguments as to what the
word means. We seem to understand what a culture is even if a definition is not obvious: its a group of people bound together by shared traits, such as language,
beliefs, religion or customs; also frequently they are bound by actual geographical barriers. Thus we speak of French culture or German culture or even corporate culture. But within cultures there
are smaller groups, such as tribes. A tribe, like a culture, is a group with shared values and beliefs, but it is much smaller and more tightly-knit; in fact, the
