politics yet. Everything they talk about is in the simplest terms, making everything adults discuss seem almost silly. Independence equals marching, new dances, new songs, new new hairstyles, new school
uniforms, new flags, and new grass to young Nwada. Personifying independence is how Nwada is able to try to understand it and oddly enough, does make some accurate connections.
Part of the reason Nwada is unable to grasp the concept of independence is that she is unaware of the size of the world
around her. She is not able to understand how one country is able to control another, or how one is able to give another freedom.
Without knowing what independence even is, Nwada takes the concept of independence from a completely different angle. She views it as a person. Someone who could be
visiting or stay for a long time. When compared to actual independence, this is not that far off. No, independence is not a person. But it can be around for
a short period or long period of time. What Nwada has yet to understand is that independence does not simply arrive and leave. Nwada also compares independence to the
end of the world. While it may be the end of the world as she currently knows it, independence is usually viewed as a good thing. This would be why
it is a concept worth fighting for and celebrating. So it is a little confusing that Nwada thinks the celebration is for the end of the world. Although, when you
think about how no one in that town knows exactly what independence will bring, it isnt too hard to understand Nwadas fear that it will bring the end of the
