by K. Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction Hamlet asks one of the most profound questions in history when he ponders "To
be or not to be." This paper tries to answer his question and argues that there are two things happening in this soliloquy. The first is that Hamlet is trying
to decide whether or not to commit suicide; the second is that he is using his musings on death as a reason to rationalize his inaction with regard to Claudius.
Discussion The phrase "to be or not to be" seems both simple and innocuous, because we encounter the word all the time: "Will he be there?"; "Will she be happy
with this?" and similar questions are posed every day. But the simple language is used to express a very deep meaning; for "be" here refers not to ordinary matters but
to the state of being, to existence itself, and suddenly Hamlets question is not one of trifles but literally a matter of life and death. To exist or not to
exist, that is the question. From there, it becomes apparent quite quickly that he is considering suicide with some degree of seriousness, because he speaks of death with longing:
"To die ... tis a consummation / Devoutly to be wishd" (Ham. 3.1.59-63). But then he begins to reconsider his position, first wondering what "dreams may come" after death, and
then finally realizing that it is not knowing what comes next that makes people continue living even when they would rather die; the uncertainty "makes us rather bear those ills
