man cannot understand Him. Anselms approach to spirituality was to use words that would focus ones attention on Christ and the prayer. He expected the words themselves to have a
significant impact. Ignatius spiritualty was centered on Christ and imitating His acts. He focused on Christs priorities when He was on earth and points out that one of Christs most
common acts was prayer (Boston College, 2007). Jesus prayed often to His Father and Loyola prayed often to Christ. The spirituality of Loyola was to try to incorporate all the
lessons of Christ, which would include forgiveness, love, peace, helping the poor, and justice (Boston College, 2007). Christ did not distinguish between classes of people and neither did Loyola (Boston
College, 2007). Ignatius also knew the realities in Christs era. It was a world of violence, cruelty, abuse of power, and injustice. Spirituality during the Middle Ages
was associated with specific virtues along with the acts of praying, preaching, and instructing (McGoldrick, 2009). During this time, spiritual people were perceived as those who went beyond the typical
religious requirements. Since most of these behaviors were seen as taking place in monasteries, laypeople had little to do with spirituality (McGoldrick, 2009). The Reformers like John Calvin changed that.
Reformers argued that Gods grace changes or transforms lives. Calvin consistently wrote and preached about the Holy spirit through whom anyone could become spiritual (McGoldrick, 2009). St. Anselm of Canterbury
was a prolific writer. He mostly wrote about theological and philosophical issues of interest in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Besides large works, Anselm wrote many prayers, often
