relating to domestic violence are alarming to say the least. Our perceptions of domestic violence, however, often involve the stereotypical idea of a man abusing a woman (Baskerville, 2003).
This idea is referred to by some authors as the "myth" of domestic violence (Baskerville, 2003). Practically every arm of our culture promotes that myth, however. The
media, in particular, seems enchanted with the idea that domestic violence always entails violence committed by men and directed at women. Even our laws are perpetuated by that myth.
In reality, men are often the victim of domestic violence as well. Our image of the male gender, however, makes it difficult for us to readily accept males
being abused at the hands of females. Men being abused does not fit our image of "masculinity". Migliaccio (2001) notes that many times men that are abused are
reluctant to admit this abuse because they fear emasculation at the hands of society. As a result they tend to hide or deny the abuse (Migliaccio, 2001). Despite
our refusal to accept the fact, however, men do sometimes face abuse at the hands of females and this abuse can range from emotional abuse to severe physical abuse.
Domestic violence is an all too frequent occurrence in modern society. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1.5 million women
are raped or physically assaulted by their "intimate partner" every year in the United States (Berlinger, 2004). The CDC also reports that some 834,700 men suffer similar fates every
year (Berlinger, 2004). Some researchers report, in fact, that men are just as likely as women to be victims of domestic violence (Prendeville, 2003). Furthermore, we have had
