that manifests in an obsession over perceived body appearance. Bulimia is a similar problem but with different mechanisms of manifestation. An estimated 10,000,000 females and 1,000,000 males suffer
from either anorexia or bulimia every year (USA Today, 2006). The impact of these conditions can range from maladaptive social behavior to severe physical consequence, even death.
Although considerable research has been invested towards doing so, the precise cause of Anorexia nervosa has yet to be determined conclusively. Researchers
generally agree, however, that anorexia involves negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional assumptions and core beliefs. Evans (2006, 37) notes that "The factors that serve to perpetuate an eating disorder may
have little to do with why the illness is continuing". Anorexia nervosa is a behavioral condition in which its victims (despite the fact
that they are at least fifteen percent below the normal body weight for their frame, age, and height) perceived themselves as being overweight and consequently engage in extreme dietary restrictions.
Interestingly, several structural and functional changes in the neurochemical pathways of the brain occur with anorexia and these continue to reinforce the stimulation derived from the aberrant behavior even
after treatment and recovery has ensued (Evans, 2006). This condition is classified as an ego-syntonic condition in that the rigid dieting
which characterizes the condition is perceived as a positive by the individual suffering from anorexia. Many times anorexia nervosa manifests itself
not only in severely restricted diets but strange rituals involving those diets. These rituals, in themselves ego-syntonic in nature, can include a refusal to eat in front of others
