Anorexia nervosa is a condition in which an individual who is otherwise healthy (most commonly an adolescent or teenage girl) experiences dramatic weight loss because food intake is less than
the bodys metabolism requires for sustenance (Lucas 7). This weight loss can lead to impaired bodily functions and thought processes as well as debilitating long-term health consequences (Lucas 9-10).
The question What is anorexia nervosa? is difficult to answer conclusively because it is a physical, psychological, and social malady. University of Hawaii psychologist Kelly Bemis has thoughtfully
defined anorexia nervosa as " a complex of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes occurring in individuals who starve themselves because of an aversion to food or weight gain" (Lucas 8).
Because there are no laboratory procedures that can reveal the presence of anorexia, it is often described as a mental disorder, which some researchers believe overemphasize the emotional characteristics
of the illness at the expense of its physical components (Lucas 9). The actual cause of anorexia nervosa is difficult to pinpoint because because it can vary according to the
individual in terms of simplicity or complexity (Lucas 5). Anorexia nervosa ultimately becomes a process that can affect the growth of the body and thought patterns, and can be
