The popular mindset is that the condition manifests primarily as a result of the constant cultural pressure to be thin, from the constant cultural message that being thin is a prerequisite to being beautiful. Another theory is slowly emerging regarding anorexia, however. That theory is that anorexia is a lifestyle choice that predates our popular culture. The intent of this paper is to more fully explore that theory and to present anorexia as a lifestyle choice that relates to an individuals need for control. The thesis can be presented, in fact, that: "Anorexia is not a disease caused by images in media but rather a lifestyle choice made by people on a personal level". It is easy to understand how we might jump to the conclusion that eating behavior relates to cultural pressure. In the U.S. we emphasize appearance over practically any other aspect of an adolescents existence. Its not only a teens peers that are telling them that "thin is in", its American culture as a whole. While these influences are most obvious in terms of teenage girls, they are present as well in regard to teenage boys. The result of such adverse societal input is the formation of a number of dysfunctional assumptions and negative automatic thoughts. Whether eating behavior is the product of culture or simply a conscious choice to take control of ones life, however, is a valid question.
