the human brain with bias. Based on research from the 1970s, he expected to find that further studies would the two sides of the brain to be similar, and this
was not the case. He states that the "division of the mind is profound" (Ornstein, 1997, p. 4). Furthermore, he states that these differences have been instrumental and influential in
the formation of human society. His intention with this text is offer a compilation of research over the last two decades (prior to the books publication) and he achieves this
goal very well, as his overview is astutely written and seems to be comprehensive. Ornsteins survey begins in prehistory, and what scientists feel occurred with the evolution of the
human brain, that is, the evolution of the hemispheres is "thought to be the moment when we became fully human" (p. 12). The first several chapters are devoted to primarily
to history before Ornstein settles down to the heart of the text, which reports on research, such as what happens when the tissue connecting the two hemispheres is severed, a
procedure used to aid epilepsy. When this occurs, the two sides of the brain cannot communicate with each other and interesting phenomena can result, such as one hand buttoning a
shirt while the other hand unbuttons it. The last section of the book deals with speculation about future discoveries relative to how the two hemispheres function. The book has
extensive end notes, a good bibliography, and a helpful index. Ornstein avoids the use of jargon so the text is easily understandable by the non-professional reader. Its most severe drawback
is that it is nine years old, which means that there is undoubtedly a great deal of new research that is not covered in this text. Freed, J. &
