article is a qualitative study examining safety issues which impact on caregivers to clients that have some type of dementia, including but not limited to Alzheimers disease. The study is
undertaken from the perspective of a group of caregivers using a qualitative methodology. Using a focus group approach with a representative sample of care givers the research assesses the safety
issues which are faced in everyday situations where patients with dementia are being cared for in a home environment, and the experiences of the care gives in managing the safety
issues. The paper provides background information and justifies the need for research, discussing how and why safety issues are a particular problem for this population, The aim of the
research is to identify the way in which improvements in terms of safety may be implemented. The researchers apply the Transtheoretical model of health behavior change to the issues in
order to determine the way in which intervention may be implemented in order to improve safety. Information regarding the way the caregivers undertook safety management was also discussed as well
as identification of the challenges faced by carers, including the barriers which exist in the optimal management of safety factors. The caregivers provided details of the processes use to make
changes in order to create a safer environment and reduce injuries, it was found that the processes described by were aligned with the Transtheoretical model of health behavior change indicating
the benefit of using this model in the home care setting. The researchers state that this is a model that may be useful in promoting increased safety in the home
and warrants further research. Rowe, M. A., Kairalla, J. Al, McCrae, C. S, (2010), Sleep in dementia caregivers and the effect of a nighttime monitoring system, Journal
