of Ottawa. The paper is a study undertaken to attempt an analysis of clerics who are sexual offenders and the circumstances under which they offend. The author finds that the
victims of most clerical offenders are boys around the age of 11, living with both parents; this finding supports the idea that clerical sex offenders are different from non-clerical sex
offenders, because the typical victims of the latter are women. Is included because it provides general background on clerical sexual offenders, and does provide a brief discussion of the difference
between clerical and non-clerical offenders. The study is undated but the bibliography lists references through 2005, so it is relatively recent. Haywood, T.W., Kravitz, H.M., Grossman, L.S., Wasyliw, O.E. &
Hardy, D.W. (1996). Psychological aspects of sexual functioning among cleric and noncleric alleged sex offenders. Child Abuse & Neglect, 20(6), 527-536. Haywood, Kravitz, Wasyliw and Hardy are associated with Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Lukes Hospital in Chicago; Grossman is associated with University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. The authors conducted a study to confirm their hypothesis that cleric sexual abusers would
differ from both non-clerical abusers and normals. The results bore them out: clerics were more likely to report fewer victims, older victims and more male victims than non-clerical abusers. The
fact that clerics had a lower offense rate in general suggests to the authors that as a group the clerical abusers may be less psychologically disturbed than non-clerics. This study
is included because it speaks precisely to the matter under discussion and because it has an additional control group of interest: clerics who are non-offenders are used as a comparison.
