Discussion Andrew Sullivan is a writer, editor and activist who is himself gay. Anna Quindlen is a journalist, married and the mother of three who strongly supports gay rights. Although labels such as "liberal," "conservative," "left," and "right" are misleading, even useless at times, it seems as though he is somewhat more conservative than she when it comes to the struggle for equality for homosexuals. Quindlen wrote an article entitled "Evans Two Moms" in which she his friends say Evan is lucky because he has two moms, though the concept had no legal meaning until "a judge in New York approved the adoption of a six-year-old boy by his biological mothers lesbian partner. Evan. Evans mom. Evans other mom. A kid, a psychologist, a pediatrician. A family" (Quindlen, 1992, p. 33). From this gentle beginning Quindlen goes on to detail the difficulties encountered by gays and lesbians who want to legitimize their love for one another but cannot. These marginalized individuals face barriers that never even occur to straight people: they dont have the right to care for an ailing partner; they cant file joint tax returns; there are no survivors benefits for the one left behind (Quindlen, 1992). Quindlen says this prejudice is unfair and medieval, and the solution is to legalize gay marriage (Quindlen, 1992). She says there is "no reason" to take a "patchwork approach of corporate, governmental and legal steps" to approaching a problem that can be much more easily solved by simply allowing two people in love to say "I do" (Quindlen, 1992, p. 35).
