a workplace problem -- worker motivation -- and then offers a theoretical background for understanding motivation -- the foundational theory of motivation created by psychologist Abraham Maslow in the 1950s.
Brenner (1999) explains Maslows theory briefly and admits that there has been criticism of it, yet maintains that this theoretical perspective provided a "foundation upon which to build an understanding
of the reasons we do what we do" (Brenner, 1999). The author then offers specific examples of how Maslows theory applies to everyday business occurrences, which serves to aid the
reader in understanding the practicality of this theory. This leads into a discussion of how workplaces can be designed so that they satisfy basic needs such as security. The
authors credentials are not presented in this article and the material supporting the arguments presented are anecdotal in nature. However, it does show how Maslows foundational theory of motivation can
be applied to the workplace and is, therefore, highly informative. Also, Brenner supplies a bibliography that adds to the authenticity of her observations. This writer/tutor cannot offer a statement
regarding the usefulness of this article to the students curriculum development project since I have no way of knowing what that project is. The student, in composing his/her own paper
from this example, can draw conclusions from the above description. Also, if the student wishes copies of the online articles referenced in this report, they can be provided. (This answer
