both of these heroes, the ancient and the modern, were extraordinarily skilled people who placed immensely value on maintaining their pride, as this was, in either case, foundational to their
sense of self. Throughout the course of his epic poem, Homer dramatizes incidents in which Odysseus creates situations that anger the gods. For instance, when Odysseus and his men
are trapped in the cave of the Cyclops, Odysseus has the opportunity to escape without revealing his identity to Polyphemus; however, his pride intervenes. Known for his cleverness, initially, Odysseus
tells the Cyclops that his name is "Nobody," which results in the Cyclops yelling in pain when Odysseus blinds him, "Nobodys killing me now by fraud and by force" (Homer
224). Because of the ludicrous nature of this assertion, the Cyclops colleagues thought his cries were a joke and did not come to aid. As the Greeks are making
their escape, Odysseus cannot resist and he calls back to Polyphemus, saying that if "any man on the face of the earth should ask you/who blinded you, shamed you so-say
Odysseus,/raider of cities gouged out your eye" (Homer 227). As Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, Odysseus makes a powerful god his enemy and it is Poseidon who sets the
