Mary was the eldest sister and likely born in 1499. The date of Annes birth is a bit more difficult to pinpoint with 1501, 1504, 1507, and even 1512
suggested as possibilities. The details of the sisters early lives are scant, but there is a strong suggestion that there was always a rivalry or competitiveness that existed between
them that their parents did nothing to discourage. Anne was rumored to have enjoyed much closer relationships with her mother and brother George, but in their early years both
daughters had a strong need to please their father and were willing to go to great lengths to do so. Most of their childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood were
shaped by experiences designed to improve their fathers stature in the Kings court. So enamored was Sir Thomas of the royal family that Mary was reportedly named after Mary
Tudor, daughter of Henry VII. At their fathers request, Anne and Mary were both sent to France, but perhaps at different times. The king named Sir Thomas French ambassador,
and he ingratiated his daughters into courtly society to his advantage. While Anne focused upon immersing herself in the French language and culture, Mary became a prominent member of
the royal familys inner circle, even as Mary Tudors maid of honor in her marriage to Louis XII. However, perhaps because of her deep religious faith, Anne was much
more concerned with morality and social propriety than was her sister. In her letters, Anne frequently referred to her pride in being "a woman of good reputation," whereas Mary
