Illumination on suggested theme From the beginning of her essay, Sayre explains how scientific investigation is a field where staying up to the minute on the latest discoveries is imperative.
By staying informed, scientists not only gain knowledge for their own investigations, but they can learn when a line of investigation has turned out to be a dead end. Because
of this sharing of information among scientific professionals, discoveries dont just emerge suddenly on the horizon, but come rather from a "clear line of progression, traceable in the literature" (Sayre
125). In a larger sense, all current scientific investigation builds upon the vast body of knowledge that has accrued over centuries. As the saying goes, todays scientists "stand on
the shoulders of giants." On a narrower scale, the same principles apply regarding the small steps that individual scientists make towards current goals. As Sayre illustrates in her essay, scientific
discovery is a complicated process that often requires the input of countless scientists, who, individually, find a small piece of a larger puzzle until the goal is reached. An example
of this is contained within the essay. Sayre makes it clear that the work of Rosalind Franklin significantly contributed to the success of the Watson and Crick team.
