novel by Elizabeth Hand is based on the script of the 1999 remake of Anna and the King starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat. The dramatization of this story has
a long history beginning with a stage play in 1944, a film in 1946 starring Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison, a Broadway production and subsequent film remake in 1956 starring
Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, another stage production starring Lou Diamond Phillips and finally this 1999 film. It is important to note that each and every film production of this
story has been banned in Thailand. In fact, the Film Institute in Thailand even forbade the making of the movie in country. This last one was filmed in Malaysia (BBC
News Online htm). The stage productions, movies and this book by Elizabeth Hand demonstrate how people of different cultural backgrounds can resolve conflict when each is willing to learn
about the others culture and when each is willing to make compromises for the sake of developing cooperative relationships. The only problem is that the movie script and book text
are nearly pure fantasy. None of the these accounts is an accurate representation of the events that really occurred. Lessons regarding cultural diversity and cooperative relationships must be taken
