Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page description of the symptoms and causes of this form of inflammatory arthritis. Affecting an estimated 129 people out of every 100,000, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) impacts primarily the cervical column, more precisely the joints which occur between each vertebrae of the spine and between the spine and pelvis. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

which occur between each vertebrae of the spine and between the spine and pelvis (Mayo Clinic, 2004). It is a type of A type of inflammatory arthritis and is
also known as spondylitis or rheumatoid spondylitis (Mayo Clinic, 2004). The term Ankylosing Spondylitis can be broken down to the Greek
root words "ankylosing" and "spondyl". While the latter of these terms, "spondyl", refers to the spine, "ankylosing" refers to a stiffness, a rigidity, a fusing together (NASS, 2004; Arthritis
Foundation (1), 2004). "Itis", in turn, is an inflation (Arthritis Foundation (1), 2004). In other words, Ankylosing Spondylitis is one in which there is a stiffness and rigidity
of the backbone caused by inflammation (Arthritis Foundation (1), 2004). In the most advanced cases of Ankylosing Spondylitis the vertebrae of
the backbone may fuse together and even other body parts such as arms, legs, hips, shoulders, knees, ankles, the chest and the neck can be affected (Mayo Clinic, 2004; Arthritis
Foundation (1), 2004). Major deformity can result if the disease is left untreated (Arthritis Foundation (1), 2004). The Mayo Clinic (2004) reports that as the inflammation associated with
AS increases: "new bone forms in the healing process. Your vertebrae begin to grow together,
forming vertical bony outgrowths (syndesmophytes) and becoming stiff and inflexible". NASS (2004) reports that
this condition can even affect the eyes, lungs, bowel and heart. It can cause an irritation of the iris of the eye (iritis), for example, an irritation which is
