In many ways, Anita Roddick is particularly interesting example of an entrepreneur, since her business enterprise The Body Shop was one of the first to be
based not only on commercial interests but also on environmental and human rights issues. On the one hand, this encouraged a much wider range of customers than would otherwise have
been the case, and also engendered a great deal of interest in the marketing world simply because the concepts on which the business were founded were so unusual.
Anita Roddick
was born of Italian parentage in Sussex in the early 1940s and originally trained as a teacher. However, in the 1960s, in common with many other young people of her
generation, she travelled extensively in the East and it was then that her interest in anthropology, and in different cultural practices, developed. She became aware not only of the vast
divide between rich and poor in developed and under-developed countries, but also of the possibilities which a western commercial enterprise could open up for workers in the poorer countries. Many
of the countries she travelled through clearly showed the way in which workers were exploited, by their own governments and by foreign investors, and Roddick saw a way in which
such workers could find a much more egalitarian market for their labour in the form of a westernised commercial enterprise.
