Research Compiled By - The lesson planning necessary to present a third grade science unit titled "Life
Science: Animals and Their Environments" includes the idea of also incorporating art into the lesson. The first artwork to be included in the lesson plan will be representations of cave
drawings, as the teacher will explain that how humans have depicted the animal kingdom from its earliest beginnings (Somerville, 2003). This section of the lesson will include how early people
related to animals and to the earth in general; why they have lasted thousands of years; and the nature of the first "paint," i.e., ("earth, soot from the fire, charcoal
or chalk, mixed with sap, spit or melted animal fat") (Somerville, 2003, p. 4). The placement of these cave paintings, which are typically found in difficult to access grottoes, suggests
that they were part of magical rituals. This supposition is born out by the fact that there is evidence that spears were hurled at some paintings, which suggests that they
were used in primitive hunting rituals (Fleming, 1974). Experts believe that ancient peoples believed that by depicting animals, they gained power over them. The lesson will explain how this
association with magic and the divine became more profound and complex as societies developed and the teacher will show art from ancient Egypt that illustrates how certain animals, such as
