because of animal rights extremists who targeted anyone who had anything to do with farms in the region that breed guinea pigs for medical research (Animal research, 2004). Cambridge University
was forced to abandon plans to build a primate research center due to the additional costs of security necessary to thwart animal rights activists. As this indicates, many people believe
that research using animals as test subjects is inherently immoral and unjustified. One would think--from the violence being perpetrated against researchers by animal rights activists--that these scientists were torturing
animals for sadistic pleasure rather than to ensure drug safety or find a cure for cancer or any one of dozen lines of research designed to benefit the whole of
humanity. Examination of this debate shows that the emotions run high in regards to the issue of animal research. However, it should be pointed out that the perspective of research
scientists rarely finds its way into the media. When the rationale for animal research is considered, it becomes obvious that animal research is a necessary evil, as this is the
only way that to be sure that new drugs will actually be beneficial. An opinion poll conducted in the UK in 1999 showed that only 24 percent of those
polled were in favor of animal research, however, if the question was prefaced with information that showed that the research was justified, the results were remarkably different with the majority
