Also noted is the fact that while animals have some rights, those are hardly equivalent to real fundamental rights for living beings. For example, animals cannot legally be neglected or tortured, but it is permissible to slaughter them. Further, arguments for animal rights is discussed philosophically by leading authors in the field. Appropriate books and journals are used to support the idea that animals are not treated well by society. The paper examines social consciousness and the fact that animal rights is really a social movement. The momentum is examined in the context of various cultures and it is pointed out that for example, in Germany, religious and cultural factors play a role. In that instance, it is noted that kosher butchering is controversial. Many other examples are provided. Additionally, time is discussed as the present seems to be the right time for change.
