that can be seen as heralding communism, or socialism, as the way of life, and yet also a novel that speaks of how the world of men, where politics and
power are at play, is essentially destructive to the nature of people. It is a story of simple hopes in a complex world and the depressing realities of social oppression.
It is a story that involves many things and can be enjoyed for the classic it is, on many different levels. "Animal Farm" is the story of a group
of barnyard animals who get together and realize that they must change things and ensure that the humans are not in control of them. If they can break free of
the world of men they can love one another, share with one another, and survive happily for all time. They succeed for awhile and live well but then one becomes
leader and starts to force the animals to work hard so they can begin trading with man, who is presumed to be the evil they are avoiding. Those in charge
ultimately destroy the dream that the animals had, the dream put into play by Old Major, as they begin to become more human like and put aside the notion of
freedom for the sake of wealth and power. As mentioned, many see this work as a novel that encourages true socialist societies. If this is the case we see
that when the animal farm first began to work on its own it was wondrous. The animals worked together, learning new tasks and skills, and they were all prosperous until
one became leader and wanted more. This would, in many ways, indicate the selfish desire for capitalism and material possessions. And, in the end we see that the dream of
