the induction of an anxiety-inducing experience has been shown to improve performance at successfully navigating said experience without succumbing to anxiety. This is immensely promising for those individuals with crippling
situational anxiety, such as students who suffer from advanced test anxiety. This paper will explore a variety of past experiments with animal-assisted therapy with an eye towards applying the principles
to a contemporary scholastic setting as a preventative measure against test anxiety among students. One of the more in-depth studies to take place into the efficacy of animal-assisted therapy was
carried out in 1991. In this test, a sample of 45 adult women were asked to perform similar stress-inducing tasks in two separate environments; in one case, in a laboratory
setting with the experimenter present, and in the second case in the privacy of their homes (Allen, Blascovich, Tomaka, & Kelsey, 1991). The in-home experiment was moderated by having the
women perform the task in the presence of a pet dog, one of their female friends, or neither (Allen et al., 1991). During the lab phase, a baseline measurement of
physiological stress signifiers was taken following an extended period of rest, after which the subjects were asked to perform reasonably challenging mathematical exercises alternating with periods of sitting quietly, during
which further measurements were taken (Allen et al., 1991). Then, the measurements were compared with the baseline to develop a model for the deviation in physiological signifiers that occurs during
stress. Similar exercises were then repeated at home, either with the subject alone, in the company of a pet, or in the company of a female friend, with similar baseline
and stress-induced measurements being recorded. The results of these tests "demonstrated that autonomic reactivity was moderate by the presence of a compansion, the nature of whom was critical to the
