In their article entitled "Anger in Adolescents: Sex, Ethnicity, Age Differences,
and Psychometric Properties" authors Reyes, Meininger, Liehr, Chan and Mueller (2003) explore the phenomena of anger expression and how it varies according to age, ethnicity, sex, and various psychometric properties.
While the topic of anger expression might at first appear irrelevant to nursing, it is in reality quite significant. The authors point out, in fact, that the manner
in which anger is experienced and expressed can be important factors in determining an individuals risk for cardiovascular disease. The authors define "anger-in" as anger which is suppressed
or inhibited while "anger-out" is defined as anger which is expressed to other individuals or even inanimate objects. This study, although
lacking in certain key aspects, should prove very beneficial to our understanding of anger as it relates to cardiovascular disease. Although clinically we have precise definitions for stressors such
as anger and even the response of the cardiovascular system to stress we have only a limited understanding of why some individuals respond to stress differently than do others.
Current medical theory suggests that individuals who evidence a more exaggerated response to stressful events are more at risk for conditions such as hypertension and coronary heart disease than those
who evidence smaller cardiovascular responses. Reyes, Meininger, Liehr, Chan and Muellers (2003) study is designed to measure anger, both the experience of anger
and its expression, among three demographic groups: African Americans, European Americans, and Hispanic American. Each group, however, was limited to individuals between the age of eleven and sixteen
