Angelou knew where she stood from birth. Her early memories revolved around wishing she was in a different circumstance than she was. At the same time, her religious upbringing and
her grandmothers positive influence, taught her why the caged bird sang. While she dreamed of a better life, she accepted her self, finally, for who she was. The autobiographical account
is a stunning recollection of facts, but her stellar writing takes what some might construe as an ordinary story and turn it into a multidimensional piece. A student writing on
this subject can use this introduction as an example of what a short review might look like. II. Characterization Angelous paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson is
certainly part of the lower class. Yet, she had a working class mentality as she is not afraid of work. She does not appear downtrodden. Rather, she is happy to
perform menial tasks if that is what will put supper on the table. It should be noted that a good deal of biblical reference is made in the book and
that the South was, and still is, a largely religious part of the country. Thus, a lower social class is not necessarily looked down upon. Many religious groups look down
upon the upper classes, who have great wealth, but do not give to the poor. Grandmother Henderson is an example of a good, Christian woman as seen in the South
during that time period. At the same time, she had the wherewithal for business ownership and was able to ride out the Great Depression, unlike others. While not wealthy, she
was able to take care of herself and the children. Grandmother Henderson raised the grandchildren a good part of their lives. Her son, Big Bailey Johnson, who was Mayas father,
