poverty and very extreme situations as an Irish citizen. The title refers to his mother, Angela, and the work essentially offers a memoir that delves into a childhood that has
helped the author develop into the individual he is today. The following paper offers a summary and analysis of this work by McCourt. Angelas Ashes "Frank McCourt was
born in Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents. Unable to find work in the depths of the Depression, the McCourts returned to Ireland, where they sunk deeper into the
poverty" (Academy of Achievement, 2007). This is essentially where McCourts work begins as he notes, "My father and mother should have stayed in New York where they met and married
and where I was born" (McCourt, 1999; 11). Aside from this particular work McCourt has written many other works, and worked in
many different positions. As an adult he became a teacher of creative writing, working in New York (Academy of Achievement, 2007). Apparently his students would often ask him to read
something he had written, which led him to write more and more, but also led him to a realization that he could not necessarily find "his voice" in his own
writing (Academy of Achievement, 2007). This happened after he retired from teaching and he wrote Angelas Ashes (Academy of Achievement, 2007). He says, in an interview about this work, that
he was not really sure what he was doing and whether it would ever even get published: "I was just dreaming, and if, if Id written the book and nobody
