Many of her short stories, fairy tales of sorts, clearly illustrate this point as the reader can see elements of ancient stories, the old bottles, being filled with more modern
images of various characters, the new wine. In the following paper we examine this perspective in four of her short stories from her work titled "The Blood Chamber." The four
stories examined are "The Courtship of Mr Lyon," "The Tigers Bride," "The Snow Child," and "The Lady of the House of Love." Carters Stories In "The Courtship of
Mr Lyon" we begin to clearly see that this tale is not unlike the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." In this tale we have a man, a modern
man driving a car. His car breaks down and he must find shelter in a mansion which is owned by the Beast. In this story we see the man steal
something from Beauty before he leaves and this of course, leaves the Beast irate. And, as would be expected from the "old bottle" that is the tale of Beauty and
the Beast, Beauty offers her beast the ultimate reconciliation which is herself. As one author notes, this particular tale is perhaps the most obvious rendition of a classic fairy
tale: "The stories include The Courtship of Mr. Lyon,] a fairly straightforward interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, which is an exception among these tales; most of the stories arent
quite what you expect" (Thayer). Though, we are presented with another Beauty and the Beast rendition in "The Tigers Bride." In "The Tigers Bride" we have a father who plays
a game of cards and bets his daughter. He loses his daughter to the Beast. The Beast promises her freedom if he can but catch a glimpse of her. She
